Indian Overseas Bank

Indian Overseas Bank is a major banking firm headquartered in Chennai. At present, the bank has over 1950 domestic branches along with six branches overseas. Other than providing a complete range of banking products and services, Indian Overseas Bank offers an in-house Information Technology Department certified by ISO. The Technology Department has designed the software that enables over 1200 branches of the bank to offer online banking services to the customers. IOB further has a large network of more than 600 ATMs spread across India. The International VISA Debit Card offered by the bank is accepted in ATMs that belongs to NFS networks and Cash Tree.

Indian Overseas Bank History

IOB was established in 1937 by Shri.M.Ct.M. Chidambaram Chettyar with the primary objective to promote foreign exchange operations and overseas banking. The bank started its operation with three branches one each in Karaikudi, Chennai and Rangoon. Then the bank quickly opened its branches in Singapore and Penang. Form the very beginning of its operation, Indian Overseas Bank was specialized in overseas banking and foreign exchange activities. Five banks including Kulitali Bank was acquired by IOB in 1960 and in 1969, the bank got nationalized by the Indian Government. The bank begins to emphasize on opening new branches in rural areas of the country after nationalization. In 2009, IOB acquired Shree Suvarna Sahakari Bank which was based in Pune.
