Indian Bank

Indian Bank is based in Chennai and it is one of the major commercial banks in India. At present, the bank has over 22,000 employees working in about 1,750 branches of the bank. Indian Bank also has overseas branches in countries like Sri Lanka, Singapore, and 229 correspondent banks located in 69 countries. As on 31st March 2009, the total business of the bank crossed Rs. 1,24,413 crores and the net profit increased to Rs. 1245.32 crores. Indian Bank also provides core banking solutions in all its 1750 branches which is a significant achievement.

Indian Bank History

Indian Bank has a long history and it has seen many ups and downs. The bank was established on 15th August 1907, as a part of the Swadeshi Movement. During its early expansion, Indian Bank opened branches in major cities populated by important Chettiar. In 1932, the bank opened its first international branch in Colombo another in Jaffna in 1935. The Jaffna branch closed down in 1939 due to several circumstances prevailing inside the bank. Indian Bank opened another branch in Rangoon in 1940; however, it was closed in the next year itself. In 1941, the bank opened branches in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Ipoh. During 1960s, Indian Bank acquired Salem Bank and Mannargudi Bank. On 19th July 1969, the bank gets nationalized with 14 other banks by the Government of India. The bank celebrated its centenary year in 2007.
